Why sleep-away camp?
What it is
Sleep-away camp is a stretch of summer — one week to a full season — where kids live in cabins with peers and counselors, away from home and screens. Days are built around activities, meals together, and the small responsibilities of looking after yourself.
What the research says
The American Camp Association’s multi-year National Camp Impact Study found the strongest outcome evidence for independence and social growth, and campers name independence and responsibility among the most lasting things they carry home. We’ll leave the claims there.
What it costs, and how sessions work
Honest range: roughly $1,500 for a one-week starter session to well above $8,000 for a full season at a classic camp. Most first-timers start with one or two weeks. Registration typically runs fall through spring for the following summer, and popular camps fill early.
Signs of readiness
- Sleepovers at a friend’s or grandparent’s house go fine — even if there are some nerves first.
- They can manage the basics on their own: getting dressed, showering, keeping track of their things.
- They’re curious about it — camp works best when the kid is at least a little bit in on the idea.
When you’re ready: start with your camper.
